Eurocontrol Learning Zone

The Eurocontrol Learning Zone (LZ) is a digital learning environment that supports classroom and on-line training.

The Learning Zone (LZ) is used by thousands of individual users to consult available courses, receive pre-course information and training material and to study online.

The LZ provides information about the full range of training products and services available from Eurocontrol.  Eurocontrol's training courses are delivered either in a traditional classroom setting, virtually or as e-learning.  Classroom courses are generally held at Eurocontrol's Aviation Learning Centre (ALC) which is located in Luxembourg.  E-learning courses are provided through the Learning Zone.

Eurocontrol provides a dedicated 4 day PBN classroom course, two virtual PBN courses (one specifically targetted at ATC) and a PBN Awareness e-learning package.

Follow the link below to access the LZ, and then select the CNS area to see information on this PBN training available.  If you are interested then you can register for the particular training in the LZ.

Performance Based Navigation (PBN) for ECAC (Course code: NAV-PBN)

Objectives:

The course provides an introduction to the PBN concept and a high level understanding of the differing navigation infrastructure and aircraft functionalities supporting to the different navigation specifications.

After completing the course, participants will:

  • Understand the meaning and principles associated with area navigation (RNAV) and the PBN concept; and
  • Explain the difference between RNAV and RNP specifications; and
  • State which navigation applications support the different phases of flight; and
  • Describe PBN implementation processes; and
  • List the different stages of the PBN implementation processes.

Audience:

This classroom course is primarily designed for anyone involved in the airspace or navigation domains.  However, the course is suitable for anyone who wishes to obtain a good understanding of PBN and the implementation processes that must be followed to enable a State, or region, to introduce a specific navigation application supporting a defined airspace concept.

Global Navigation Satellite System for Aviation (Course Code: NAV-GNSS)

Objectives:

After completing the course, participants will have an in-depth understanding of GNSS, its principles and benefits for civil aviation.  Specifically related to PBN, there is a module entitled 'PBN and Approach Classifications'.  Furthermore, the course looks at how the required integrity of 10-7 is achieved though the use of aircraft-based augmentation systems (ABAS), which includes Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM), and satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) and specifically the European implementation EGNOS.  In addition, the course also discusses GNSS reversion and back-up infrastructures.

Audience:

This course is designed for anyone who wishes to obtain a broad understanding of GNSS, its principles and its limitations.

Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Awareness Package (Course code: NAV-PBN-AWR)

This e-learning package was originally designed to support ICAO.  It has been significantly revised to ensure that Eurocontrol PBN training remains current and in date.  This training includes all the latest updates to the PBN Manual (ICAO Doc 9613 Edition 5).  The PBN electronic training consists of 3 main modules reflecting the three components of PBN.

The package also reflects the European mandated airspace changes as reflected in the PBN IR, the latter published mid 2018.

The PBN IR, which affects all other European Instrument Runway Ends (IRE), requires RNAV 1.  All IREs are to have a RNP APCH published with all three lines of minima (LNAV, LNAV/VNAV and LPV) by 25 January 2024 at the very latest.

The e-leaning package aims to ensure that the user will fully understand these terms and have a basic idea of what is needed to implement such applications.
