Once airborne, the crew will engage lateral navigation (LNAV) based on the standard operating procedures for that company; there is no standard, or required, height at which LNAV and autopilot/flight director (AP/FD) is to be engaged. This may create path differences on the first leg of SIDs.
Similarly, if the procedure is based on DME/DME and if the aircraft is only fitted DME/DME (with or without IRU) then the initial path may vary until the aircraft is within the coverage of the DME pair.
